Chapter 1: The Place of Experiment in Fluid Mechanics
Computation, theory, and experiment form the three legs on which modern fluid mechanics stands. Experiment remains indispensable: it validates simulations in regimes where closure assumptions are unproven, uncovers phenomena that analysts did not anticipate, and provides boundary-condition and constitutive data without which computation cannot proceed. An engineer who designs fluid machinery or flow-handling processes must know how experiments are designed, carried out, and interpreted even when the day-to-day work is done on the computer.
1.1 Experimental Objectives
Experiments in fluid mechanics fall into categories: proof-of-concept demonstrations; calibration of empirical correlations or closures; validation of CFD predictions against well-characterized benchmark data; and process measurements in full-scale equipment. Each imposes a different balance between fidelity, cost, and access. Planning begins with the objective and flows backwards to the required measurands, resolutions, and uncertainties.
1.2 Dimensional Analysis and Similarity
The Buckingham pi theorem reduces a relationship among \( n \) dimensional variables with \( r \) fundamental dimensions to one among \( n - r \) dimensionless groups. For fluid problems the Reynolds, Froude, Mach, Weber, and Strouhal numbers often emerge. Physical experiments on scaled models succeed when the governing dimensionless groups are matched; if full similarity cannot be achieved, the experimenter must identify which groups govern the phenomenon of interest and argue the significance of mismatched groups.
Chapter 2: Experimental Facilities
2.1 Wind Tunnels
Low-speed open-return tunnels circulate ambient air through a settling chamber, contraction, test section, and diffuser. The settling chamber uses honeycomb and screens to damp turbulence and align the flow; the contraction accelerates it while further reducing turbulence intensity (which scales inversely with contraction ratio). Flow quality is specified by mean flow uniformity, turbulence intensity, and flow angularity. Closed-return tunnels recycle air for efficiency and acoustic isolation but add the problem of temperature rise. Subsonic, transonic, and supersonic facilities bring their own challenges: transonic test sections use slotted or perforated walls to absorb reflected waves; supersonic tunnels must control shock-boundary-layer interaction at startup.
2.2 Water Tunnels and Channels
Water offers advantages in flow visualization (larger tracer particles, slower time scales) and in matching Reynolds number with smaller models. Open channels study free-surface flows under Froude similarity; closed water tunnels handle fully submerged geometries including cavitation studies at controlled pressure.
2.3 Shock Tubes and Specialty Facilities
Short-duration facilities — shock tubes, Ludwieg tubes, blowdown tunnels — produce brief but high-speed, high-temperature flows for research on compressibility, combustion, and high-enthalpy phenomena. Specialty rigs such as cascade tunnels isolate a single blade row of a turbomachine; rotating rigs study centrifugal and Coriolis effects; particle-laden flows study sediment and multiphase behaviour.
Chapter 3: Measurement Techniques
3.1 Velocity
Pitot–static tubes measure mean velocity from the difference between stagnation and static pressures, \( V = \sqrt{2(p_0 - p_s)/\rho} \), with compressibility and Reynolds-number corrections as needed. Hot-wire and hot-film anemometry use a heated element whose resistance varies with flow-induced cooling; they deliver high bandwidth (tens of kilohertz) but require calibration and are fragile in dirty flows. King’s law,
\[ E^2 = A + B U^{n}, \]relates voltage to velocity for a constant-temperature anemometer.
Laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) measures the Doppler shift of light scattered from seed particles crossing an interference pattern formed by two crossed beams,
\[ f_D = \frac{2 \sin(\theta/2)}{\lambda} U, \]and provides pointwise velocity without disturbing the flow. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) captures a plane of seed particles with a pulsed laser sheet and two camera exposures; the displacement field is recovered by cross-correlation of interrogation windows, yielding two-dimensional velocity fields at rates determined by the laser repetition.
3.2 Pressure
Static and total pressures are sensed through taps, tubes, and rakes. Fast-response transducers (piezoresistive, piezoelectric) capture unsteady pressures; pressure-sensitive paint (PSP) converts surface oxygen quenching of luminescent dye to a continuous surface-pressure map. Microphones measure sound pressures in aeroacoustic tests.
3.3 Flow Visualization
Flow visualization makes flow fields qualitatively accessible: surface oil-film patterns reveal skin friction direction; smoke, dye, and bubble tracers show streamlines; schlieren and shadowgraph exploit refractive-index gradients to image compressible flow features; laser-induced fluorescence combined with PIV yields simultaneous concentration and velocity fields.
Chapter 4: Data Acquisition and Signal Processing
4.1 Sampling and Aliasing
Continuous analog signals are digitized at rate \( f_s \). The Nyquist criterion requires \( f_s \geq 2 f_{max} \); violations fold high-frequency content into the baseband and corrupt the result. Anti-alias low-pass filters ahead of the A/D converter are mandatory.
4.2 Spectral Analysis
Turbulent signals are analyzed in the frequency domain through power spectral density
\[ S_{xx}(f) = \lim_{T\to\infty} \frac{1}{T} \lvert X_T(f) \rvert^2, \]estimated by Welch’s method (segment, window, FFT, average). Coherence between two signals tests for linear relationship at each frequency; cross-spectra extract phase. Wavelet transforms give localized time–frequency information for non-stationary signals.
4.3 Conditional and Ensemble Averaging
Triggered measurements in periodic flows (e.g., rotor-blade-passing) average multiple realizations phase-locked to a reference signal, extracting the coherent content. Conditional averages select realizations that satisfy a criterion (e.g., ejection events in a boundary layer) and reveal structure not visible in the full ensemble.
Chapter 5: Uncertainty and Experimental Design
5.1 Sources of Uncertainty
Uncertainty is split into bias (systematic) and random components. Bias arises from calibration error, installation, model imperfections, and unmodelled physics; random uncertainty arises from electrical noise and flow unsteadiness. Each input variable has a combined standard uncertainty \( u_i \).
5.2 Propagation
For a derived quantity \( R = f(x_1, \ldots, x_n) \), the combined standard uncertainty is
\[ u_R = \sqrt{\sum_i \left(\frac{\partial f}{\partial x_i}\right)^2 u_{x_i}^2}. \]Expanded uncertainty with coverage factor \( k \) (typically 2 for 95 percent coverage) is reported with the measurement. Correlated inputs contribute additional covariance terms that can be important when the same instrument measures multiple variables.
5.3 Designing for Low Uncertainty
Sensitivity coefficients \( \partial f/\partial x_i \) identify which inputs dominate the uncertainty. Shrinking the dominant contributor — by calibration, smarter instrument choice, or redesign of the test — is the most cost-effective improvement path. A pre-test uncertainty budget is mandatory for any serious experimental programme; a post-test analysis updates the budget and reconciles it with the observed scatter.
5.4 Validation and Reporting
Validation compares measurement with prediction within the combined uncertainty of each. An experimental report documents objective, facility, instrumentation, procedure, raw data, data-reduction equations, uncertainty analysis, and results with clearly distinguished bias and random components. Without such documentation the data cannot be used by others and cannot survive the scepticism of good engineering.
